Eligibility test
If two foreigners, or a foreigner and a Nepali citizen, want to do court marriage in Nepal, the potential bride and groom must meet the legal requirements for marriage according to the laws of their own country.
Documents required on behalf of the foreigner
- Passport of the potential foreign bride and/or foreign groom.
- No objection letter or single/divorce status recommendation from the home country civil registry or concerned embassy or consulate general in Nepal.
- Valid visa and arrival stamp in the passport dated at least 15 days before applying for court marriage.
- Recommendation letter from the local level or ward office regarding temporary residency of the potential foreign bride and/or foreign groom.
- Original and translated version of the marriage law of the potential foreign bride and/or foreign groom from their home country, with notarisation.
- Passport-size photos of the potential foreign bride and/or foreign groom, at least four copies.
- Identity documents of two witnesses, such as citizenship or passport.
Draft documents
- Application for court marriage, containing names, addresses, dates of birth, occupations, marital status, family details, self-declaration, submitted documents, witness details, signatures, and thumb impressions.
- Consent paper stating the free consent of the potential bride and groom to marry, signed with thumb impressions before the district judge and witnesses.
Court fee and certificate
- A court fee of Rs. 500 is paid while submitting the application for court marriage to the concerned district court.
- The concerned district court issues the court marriage certificate to the married couple.
If one person in the couple is a Nepali national, the eligibility and required documents for the Nepali national should also be checked under the court marriage process in Nepal.
